Before the age of portable video games and DVD players, I sat
on the sticky naugahyde backseat of the family car and saw the
better part of the American West. Joshua trees, shaggy and crooked.
Yosemite's waterfall-covered cliffs. Buffalo as big as cars.
Salt flats and sand dunes and redwood forests. I was a lucky
child; I was born to a mother who believed in showing me the
world. She was lucky too; she received many gifts from her own
mother, including a movie-star smile, delicate hands, and a passion
for travel. My maternal grandmother traveled to all 50 states,
collecting bird songs, plant names, and little silver spoons.
A teacher by profession, she believed that travel is the best
educator, and she ensured that her daughter and granddaughters
were educated properly.
Each summer my mother would plan a family trip and my grandmother
would make a game for us. On a piece of paper, she would create
a grid filled with drawings of things we might see: a windmill,
a barn, a cactus, a skyscraper, a plane, a coyote. Pen in one
hand, paper in the other, we'd stare eagerly out the window searching,
hoping to see each object first, to check off all the pictures,
and to win the prize.
In this way, with my mother behind the wheel, my grandmother's
drawings in my hands, and my sister beside me screaming, "I
see a bridge!", I learned about the world. Like I said,
I was a lucky child.
